It has been another extremely successful few months at the railway, with major progress on several fronts and other work planed for the next few months. It seems our limiting factor at present is the amount of time our members can spare to work at the railway, finances being very healthy as a result of increased patronage through better promotion of our activities. We have engaged outside contractors to do some recent work and have other jobs coming up that will benefit from our ability to finance this type of work.

L509. Our current regular engine, was taken out of service for a few weeks while the grate was replaced. The long 4' firebars had reached the end of their life a long time ago and it was decided to convert to 2' bars as used in our other locos. This required new carriers and a new dead bar pattern which along with the 40 regular bars were cast at Milson Foundry in Palmerston North. This has slowed the rate of ash dropping into the ash pan quite considerably.

We now have in stock the new book from the NZRLS The NZR Steam Locomotive by Sean Millar. 365 pages covering every class of NZR steam loco. Purchase your copy for $75 from SSR and contribute towards the cost of keeping the steam locomotives in our collection in operation

Coaling up C847

C847. The focus of a lot of attention over the past few months, 847 is almost ready to return to hopefully reliable service. Work focus inside the firebox has seen the grate completely renewed with new firebars and carrier bars. The Westinghouse air compressor was overhauled by Triple R engineering in Palmerston

C847

L509. Continues to give good service during Sunday running with no problems being experienced.

C512. Work on turning up new pins and reaming and bushing holes on the valve gear parts has been the main focus of work over the last few months. The way bar had its bearing surfaces built up and machined and has now been fitted on the frame.

531

L509. In between its regular outings the L has had a couple of small jobs carried out to keep it in top condition.

The restoration of PWD 531 is advancing with the new welded boiler now fitted to the chassis. Still a little bit of work to get it bolted down but its good progress.

Great News we have just recieved a grant from the Lion Foundation for the Purchase of a new set of fire bars for the overhaul of C 512. Many thanks to them.

Barclay 1335: For the last few weeks we have been preparing this loco for a move inside the fence. This involved removing the siderods, unbolting the inside motion and freeing up the brakes. Also a section of track was lifted to suit the heigth of the truck for unloading purposes. It was quite suprising how easily it

Fowler #5: had the esteemed honour of being the first loco inside the new North End shed when it rolled A382, Af941 and D143 into their new home. Work on the new headlights continues but finding someone capable of making the wired edges for the fronts is delaying progress slightly.

Price 221: Other than having the cab entry door on the right hand side re welded to its hinges after they parted company it continues to give great service as our “work horse”.

Fowler #5: The new spun steam dome cover top was grafted onto the old one that was surplus after L509s overhaul. Also the hole formerly used for the pump take off on that loco was welded up and after being painted was fitted in its rightful place. After successfully passing its boiler survey the regulator valve face was removed and built up before being machined off and scraped resulting in much easier and smother operation. The loco is used on Sunday trains and is performing well.
